Artist Devin Le not only spots awkward moments in everyday life well but he also knows how to portray them. “I started drawing comics during my freshman year of college as a hobby. I needed a long term project to do, and drawing webcomics seemed like a great idea since I was doodling a lot anyway,” Devin said. “Some friends recommended that I show my work online, so that’s what I did.” Now, Devin has thousands of followers on social media waiting for his webcomic series According to Devin.

“I take a lot of my inspiration from Adventure Time, like with the noodle arms on my characters,” Devin said. “My earliest comics reflected this style with very tame/PG gags. Over time, I think I was able to exaggerate the comics both in writing and drawing style, while also dealing with more heavy subjects such as mental health.”

Devin describes his current comics as ‘over the top yet relatable’ situations about life and everything else in between. “I like to explore awkward situations. I think those really build character and if I find one that most people can relate to, the comic becomes even better. It’s one of those things where if you can get people to nod then you don’t feel as bad for doing that awkward thing. Especially with social media where everyone is showing their highlight reels, I think there’s a need to show flawed human characteristics.”

As his comics were getting more and more popular, Devin began feeling about them differently as well. “I do feel the pressure,” he said. “I think when I got more popular and started getting paid to do it, there was a lot of pressure for making comics that attracted larger demographics and hit certain benchmarks. I try to ignore them and focus on the comics.”

Now, however, Devin has placed his creative life on hold. “I’m on hiatus because of my busy work schedule. I have a lot more comics drawn on my iPad that I will be posting sometime in the future.”
